Preventing Risks of Pharmacotherapy: TEAching Multidisciplinary is the key

why WE are DOING THIS PROJECT

Due to the complexity and interdependency of tasks within the medication process, there is a high risk of medication errors. One of the primary reasons for these errors is insufficient interprofessional collaboration (IPC) between the involved healthcare professionals. Studies have shown that emphasis on IPC leads to more positive patient outcomes as well as improved attitudes and well-being of healthcare professionals in their work environment. A large barrier for IPC is the lack of clarity of each other’s professional’s tasks and responsibilities. Taking the steps to understand and communicate each other’s function and perspective can break down those barriers. Therefore, the World Health Organisation has called for a stronger emphasis on education on IPC, where “students learn from, with, and about each other”

WHAT WE ARE DOING IN THIS PROJECT

PReP-TEAM is a collaborative project by the Erasmus Medical Center, the University of Oslo, the University of Limoges and the University of Rennes 1 funded by Erasmus+. With PReP-TEAM, we are aiming to develop a course on IPC regarding pharmaceutical care. This course will be developed based on stakeholders’ insights from the Netherlands, Norway and France. We will pilot our course in these countries before official implementation at the universities of our project group.

The course is intended for students of Nursing, Medicine and Pharmacy. The students are introduced to each other during an ice-breaking event, after which they individually follow preparatory e-modules. During an on-site workgroup, they are split up into interprofessional teams to work on clincal case simulations together. The learning objectives are understanding how and why they work together and understanding principles of several pharmaceutical topics.

what WE want to achieve with THIS PROJECT

By developing a framework for interprofessional education (IPE), we want to provide teachers with the tools to efficiently and succesfully implement IPE at their educational institutes. We are starting in four centers in three European countries and strive for national implementation of the course in the Netherlands, Norway and France. Afterwards, we strive to disseminate our results to other European countries for harmonisation of IPE across the EU.

More information for teachers

In the end, the students are our main audience. We want our future healthcare workers to feel confident in working interprofessionally and in working on pharmaceutical questions. Therefore, our study materials are freely available for anyone to do additional training, either by themselves or with their fellow students/colleagues.

Tuan Anh Phan

Tuan Anh Phan graduated as a pharmacist at the University of Leiden. He currently works at the ErasmusMC as a PhD student and is involved in the teaching of students of medicine. Within the PReP-TEAM project he is responsible for the logistics, planning, and development of the PReP-TEAM course. Along with the development of the course, he researches the developmental processes around implementation  in education and the effect of the course on Interprofessional competencies of students of nursing, medicine and pharmacy.

Liv Mathiesen is a pharmacist by training, and an Associate Professor in clinical pharmacy. The focus of her research is how to optimise drug therapy to the individual patient, also taking into account the patient’s experiences and attitudes towards drugs. She is responsible for the teaching in clinical pharmacy at the University of Oslo and has also been involved in the development and implementation of Interprofessional Education at UiO (Sampraks – Sampraks (uio.no)). Liv Mathiesen is the representative from the University of Oslo in the project group.
